We all want the same thing--bread and butter. We all want to see our children well-fed, and be able to relax at a cafe and share a joke together. This is how my social worker friend explained the unity between Muslims and Christians that we had just witnessed. Today we visited an organization that provides training, loans and support for people to start micro businesses. This organization just happens to be Christian, but the large group of formerly unemployed women and men speaking to us were of both Muslim and Christian faith. The hope of a better way of life is serving as common ground for people of different faiths to bond and support each other. In fact, the young Muslim man in the picture below stood up to share that he started coming to the training because he wanted to learn how to better work and communicate with Christians. Afterwards, I asked my friend about the connection between extremist violence (Muslim AND Christian) and poverty. He said “There is a DIRECT connection between the two. Playing on the desperation of the poor is a major tactic of extremists.” In the same way, allowing someone a way to earn a living can be a tool for peace.
