We already know that Erdogan and his AKP are the scum of the Earth - after all, this was the poster boy of pro-market moderate Islamism that tough Morsi and the clerical fascist Muslim Brotherhood everything they know. After decades of military dictatorship, endorsed by NATO, that had crushed the Turkish labour movement into the dust, along came a civilian (sic) government that preserved most of the dictatorships repressive legislation intact, but with a much more Thatcherite commitment to the free market, and which openly recruited Islamic Fundamentalists to the police force to do the regimes dirty work in the place of a military Erdogan could never trust. In a chilling precursor to what later happened in Egypt, I know several Turkish journalists and academics (mostly women) who will tell you that things are worse under Erdogan than under the army. This is particularly true since the brutal murder of trade unionists on May Day, 2007 and since this summers trans-global mass anti-capitalist protests that our media is fasr erasing from history.
