We always include information in our Gallery talks and courses about this ancient rock art on the Burrup Peninsular in WA which many Australians are unaware of. It is upsetting that it is not revered and cared for in the way it should be. It is at least 30,000 years old and I recall a public outcry when the Taliban deliberately destroyed two one-thousand year old Buddha statues in Afghanistan a few years ago. An Archaeologist in this article notes that the WA Government should indeed be doing far more to protect the site as it is being defaced by vandals and travellers with graffiti and carvings. It is certainly in need of far greater respect. Woodside pulled out of their proposed workings around the site after public pressure (and I believe were actually penalised by the WA Government for doing so) and Rio Tinto supported a Geologist to fully photograph and document the sites and engravings after part of it was destroyed.
