We are 13 days away from Coltons next surgery to remove a Cholesteatoma from his right ear... Colton: Mom, is it the same surgery as the last one? Me: Yes buddy, the same surgery... Colton, well, at least I know what to expect. He had surgery on the left one last March. This is yet another, chronic condition which he will need to be treated for during his life... Cholesteatomas are benign tumors that act like Cancer... they spread and destroy healthy tissue, but thankfully it does not get into the blood and travel to remote parts of the body like Cancer does... I am concerned about what the doctor will find... as during the last surgery the Cholesteatoma had ate through two areas of Coltons skull in the mastoid cavity. One was dime sized and the other was quarter sized... he has exposed brain in this area... Doctor is supposed to clean out the ear he already did surgery on... and I am worried what he will find there too. Coltons hearing seems to be worse lately... And on a few occasions he has asked me if he is going deaf... Mom, am I going to go deaf?... Here is the thing... I dont know... My response to him is that the doctor is not worried about that right now and if that changes I will tell him... We were working on homework the other night and he says to me, I think I am going deaf... and my heart breaks just a little bit... The condition he has will cause hearing to fluctuate and he often has ringing in his ears. I take comfort in the fact that I think we finally have the right doctor... and that Colton is in the right educational setting to support him... no matter how well he can hear... He has deaf friends... and deaf teachers... so, at least he knows, it is not the end of the world... What a sucky reality for a 10 year old boy... This is our normal...
