We are all clear that that we are to honor our mother and father. But what does that mean? Who does it cover? The reformers held views that are substantially different from views many hold today. For the reformers, Biblical honor was a three fold concept which included the three strands of respect, obedience, and care. Calvin, for example, says, “knowing how every individual is set over us by his appointment, we should pay him reverence, gratitude, obedience, and every duty in our power.”[2] This three fold (or four fold) concept of honor is most dramatically exampled and taught by Christ. As for His reverence for God the Father there can be no doubt. But what we cannot overlook, indeed He does not allow us to overlook, is His obedience. His speech in regards to His father is replete with references to His utter obedience, all of which climaxes with His statement of utter subjection, “… not my will but thine.” truelovedoesntwait/?p=167
