We are almost ready. Stay tuned. INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF DESIGN Tradition, innovation and sustainable development A rich calendar of initiatives for the International Festival of Design, promoted by the Plart Foundation of Naples pertaining to POR FESR 2007-2013 Objective 1.10 activity A “Culture as a resource”, gets into full swing after some fascinating previews that introduced different levels of cultural action showing new prospects of relationship between tradition and innovation, in an environmental dimension of sustainability (green economy). The programme features three editions held in October ‘014, March ‘015 and May ‘015. The project is developed as an operating platform coordinated by the Plart Foundation with the active involvement of several partners and places and it’s meant to provide new narratives for the territory through shared views from different geographical and disciplinary backgrounds. One of the themes that inspired the project is the multitude as an expression of cultural multiplicity in a global context characterized by pervasiveness of communication and a production system largely based on language and knowledge. In 1973, Ettore Sottsass prophetically launched the project “The Planet as a Festival”. His proposal represents an exhortation to take courage and dream addressed to a generation stuck and disenchanted by the austerity pervading those years. Sottsass presents his vision of a world where design helps us change our habits and revise the dynamics of our daily routine. An exhortation that the Plart Foundation embraces and promotes, in all its complexity and multiplicity, and develops through the first edition, from October 8th to 11th: Lecture series held at the Foundation by Chiara Alessi, curator, journalist and author of After the Zeroes. The new Italian design published by Laterza (October 8th ‘014, h. 5.30 PM); Marco Sammicheli, journalist and critic, design curator of Abitare, is among the contributors invited by Rem Koolhaas to the 14th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale titled Fundamentals (October 9th ‘014, h. 5.30 PM); Renato De Fusco, emeritus professor of history of architecture at the University of Naples Federico II, will present the essay Plart Foundation, plastics, art, handicraft and design published by Quodlibet (October 10th ‘014, h. 5.30 PM). At the end of the lecture series, the project Protein notes by Luciano D’Alessio will be presented together with a conference-performance during which the amino acid sequence of three proteins, silk, byssus and elastin, is associated with a sequence of notes re-elaborated by the musicians Le Voci Sally, who exalt its musicality. Even proteins have a sound inside their structure. Interactive project “Phenomenal” (October 8th, 9th, 10th ‘014) at the MADRE museum of Naples, created and realized by Giovanni Innella, designer and researcher at the Newcastle University (Gb) and by Agata Jaworska, designer and project manager at Droog, Amsterdam (Nl). Phenomenal is a curatorial process that exploits the potential of the web, explores the online culture and the ways it is produced, spread and consumed, and focuses on how art/design/architecture are integrated into this system. Music and dance performance produced by the C.T.R. Theatre Research Center of Venice, featuring the choreography of Atsushi Takenouchi, the idea and the costumes of Sonia Biacchi, the music of Hiroko Komija, that will bring on stage Life and Death and Flowers at the Antonio Niccolini Theatre of the Naples Academy of Fine Arts (October 11th ‘014 - h. 11.30 AM). The performance is mainly focused on music and dance, embodying the symmetry and the minimalism of the costumes created by Sonia Biacchi, actual Architectures for bodies made using innovative techniques and materials: windsurfing sails, synthetic whalebones, polystyrene, sailcloth, glass fiber. The event maintains continuity with the programme promoted by the Plart Foundation, that already dedicated an exhibition to the costume designer Sonia Biacchi back in 2008, highlighting the extraordinary attention paid to architecture, design, fashion and material selection when concerning the creation of her costumes. Publication of the International ideas competition that invites architects and designers to reflect on two urban stories about the city of Naples. The projects will be selected by an International panel of prominent figures in the field of design and architecture and presided by Renato De Fusco, emeritus professor of history of architecture at the University of Naples Federico II. The programme aims to transform Naples, even if just for a few days, into one of the World Design Capitals.
