We are asked over and over again for the reasons for our 100 mile - TopicsExpress

We are asked over and over again for the reasons for our 100 mile restriction on placements. We answer the question a lot, but for those of you who are new to our page, I am posting the explanation again. We are able to place as many Old Friends as our program can handle within our 100 mile radius. We currently have 63 seniors in Forever Foster Homes, almost all within 100 miles of Mount Juliet, TN. A couple of our Forever Foster dogs were placed before our restriction was in place and a couple were already living successfully with a Forever Foster Family when the family moved out of our area. We do not adopt dogs directly into homes. All placements are into Forever Foster Homes where OFSDS pays for all vetting and preventatives for the remainder of the dogs life. In a few cases we have adopted the dogs into families after a successful relationship was established. There is no expectation that the Forever Foster Family will adopt the dog, and all adoptions must start as Forever Foster Homes. We provide a safety net for our senior dogs. If they are not a good fit in their new family, for whatever reason, we take them back into our program. We have taken back about 1/3 of the dogs who we have placed and re-homed them in more suitable families or they have stayed here, always for the better for both dog and family. You can not always accurately predict how well a dog will do in a family until they move in. We will pick up a dog on a moments notice and are always available to help. If we were further than 100 miles it would be very difficult to do this. We originally did not have this limitation and had several dogs returned. It was difficult on the dogs and very time consuming for us and volunteers. There is nothing different about our senior dogs than those in other shelters across the country. If folks are too far away, we urge them to visit their local shelters. Here is a link to a blog post on the subject. oldfriendsseniordogs/6/post/2014/03/think-global-act-local.html
