We are being questioned as to why we did not take action against the person who owned Ellie, in the means of arresting and pressing charges, by several people on facebook. PFP would like to explain why our hands are tied when we come across cruelty and neglect cases: Providing for Paws has no legal authority to press charges on any owner we find that has neglected their animals or acts of cruelty. In the Detroit area, all cruelty and neglect cases go through the prosecuting attorneys office with the Michigan Humane Society. Since MHS was closed after treating Ellie, we will be contacting Michigan Humane Society 1st thing on Monday morning about going after the owner for neglect and/or possibly cruelty charges. We cannot enforce laws or have anyone arrested. MHS will do an investigation and then if they find cause, they will prosecute. Dr. Ruland at Emergency Veterinary Hospital Ann Arbor and Providing for Paws has made our documentation to hand over to MHS when we make our report. As you can see by the photo, Ellie was emaciated on top of the fighting incident, and lacked medical care immediately. If all else fails on the fighting, there may still be a case of neglect. However, that is dependent on MHS and what they are going to be able to prove to charge this owner. We will do our best to give MHS everything they need to go after the owner.
