We are bombarded with messages of “inspiration” on Facebook. We’ve all witnessed photos of thin bodies, echoed by messages of “if I can do it, you can do it.” The friend who takes great pride in his/her ability to restrict sugar. Regular posts of grueling, borderline obsessive, workouts. Statements of inspiration follow in the comment box, “nothing taste as good as thin,” “you are my motivation.” Are these well-meaning post of a “healthy lifestyle” really helpful? And should we admire them? My belief of what is inspirational does not borderline pro-anorexia or disordered eating territory. It is important to remember many people are struggling with their confidence and body love. Despite the posters desire to encourage others to do as they do (lose weight, workout religiously), we all come in different shapes and sizes, many of which fall outside of the mainstream media’s “ideal.” Taking up less space in this world does not make one more valuable. Let’s cultivate positive messages; remembering behaviors to promote balance, joy and nourishment look different for each of us. In case you were wondering, here are a few things I find admirable: Parents who care more about playing in the water with their children, than how they look in swim wear. People who can enjoy delicious food without “paying for it later” or “earning it.” Keeping favorite foods in the cupboard without restricting or to the point of uncomfortable fullness. Physical activity that rejuvenates! Confidence and appreciation for ones’ body. People who realize striving for a “perfect body” is a waste of valuable living, and not doing so is not a sign of “weakness.” Eating nutrient-rich foods to care for ones body, along with fun foods that taste good.
