We are excited that we are on the verge of some much anticipated progress on the porches! The plan is for the rest of the railings to be installed this week, and we cant wait to see them. The work on the porches for us has been sort of a microcosm of the entire project, which means that it has taken a lot of work, patience, and persistence to get things done. Our motto along the way has been an old French expression, which is basically patience is bitter but its fruit is sweet! The first sketches of how the porch should look were done about three years ago. They have been our guiding vision and we have tried to remain true to them. Weve also looked at the porches on Tasso/The Bower House -- just down the road from us -- and the Tullie Smith house in Atlanta to confirm our ideas. We really wanted the spindles on the porch have a v-joint in them and that the top and bottom rails be sloped. That is the most practical way to do them and every old house we have seen has them done that way. After much resistance in trying to get them made that way, we simply found that Marshall Lumber in Montgomery (such a great resource for old houses) routinely makes them that way and we bought them. It took a lot of persistance but in the end, problem solved! We traveled the same path relative to brick landings. We want brick landings at the bottom of the steps outside, just like at St. Lukes in Old Cahawba and Tasso/The Bower House. It has taken constant insistence but that is how they will be done. Our contractor-- Tripp Bowie-- understands how we want them and that is how they will be done! Lastly, we also want a course of bricks under the lattice work on the porch to prevent rot, but that was not done with the original brickwork, so we will just figure out a way to retrofit that somewhere along the way. The spindles and all the railing material arrived in probably late September, they were painted in early October, one section was installed in late October, and now we are on the verge of having them all put in some time in December. It has been a long and winding path, but in the end we think we will be thrilled with how sweet the porches will be!
