We are excited to announce that we have just received confirmation that a historic building of great significance to Canada is to be moved to a new location on Wednesday November 12, 2014. The Fugitive Slave Chapel preservation Project has been working on saving this building since March of 2013. After much fundraising and red tape, the original edifice of the African Methodist Church in London, Ontario, built about 1848, will finally be moved to a lot beside the structure that replaced it in 1869. The 166 year old mother structure will be coming to join her 145 year old daughter. The Fugitive Slave Chapel was a destination point for Fugitive Slaves fleeing the horrors of slavery via the Underground Rail Road from the Southern USA. The Fugitives brought many skills with them and had a desire to work hard to make a new life for themselves. They played a major role in the formation of the City of London and the political make up of Canada in general. The first integrated schools were planned at meetings in London. We are pleased with the support we have received from the public as well as various levels of government. The entire City Council of London has been behind our project from day one and over 530 donors have donated amounts ranging from twenty cents to ten thousand dollars. MP Irene Mathyssen has attended many of our functions and spoken on our behalf. Also, 13 different cultural, community and social organizations had representatives at our original meeting in March of 2013 when the FSCPP was first formed. The Chapel will begin its 2 hour journey at 9 am on November 12 and we expect it will be at its new location well before noon the same day. It will travel south on Thames Street to Horton. Go north on Ridout and East on York, then South on Colbourn to Grey There will be a reception and open house at Beth Emanuel Church from 12 noon to 7:30 pm on the day of the move, with a presentation and guest speakers at 6:30. Please join us anywhere along the route and/or at the open House. Be sure not to park along the route. Thank You George McNeish Chairman Fugitive Slave Chapel Preservation Project
