We are excited to be talking at the Embracing the Early Years conference this week in Burlington. The title of our talk is The Perfect Plan. If you would like us to talk at any of your events or organizations please let us know. Our website is coming soon. Heres the write up about us. Randy & Susan Bassett Randy and Susan Bassett are the proud parents of 11-year-old Atticus and 9 year-old Treva. Treva was born with DiGeorge Syndrome, a genetic condition which impacted her with many medical and developmental challenges. At her birth, an Advocacy Team was also born. By day, Susan is an Early Childhood Education Instructor and Randy is the CEO of DataCPR Inc. Randy has used his company to specialize in creating websites with accessibility for people with a variety of disabilities. Susan is a public speaker, addressing the community about the realities, challenges and rewards of having children with special needs and the power of inclusion. They have both guest lectured at McMaster University’s School of Nursing and at Mohawk College, as well as for non-profit organizations. Their family has also been featured on many media formats: telethons, radio, television and internet support groups. The Bassetts have also met with Ontario’s political leaders to discuss issues on health, social services and home care advocacy. Randy and Susan also sit on a number of boards and committees in the hope of helping others by sharing their experiences. In recognition for their community work, they were awarded Hamilton Regional as well as Provincial awards for their work in educating others in this area. Randy and Susan are Co-Founders and Co-Chairs of Opening Hearts, a non-profit organization focusing on the needs and well-being of children with disabilities and their families. Attracted by Randy’s and Sue’s passion and inspired by Treva and her family’s journey, many people in the community have helped give Opening Hearts a running start. This organization focuses on inclusion, family-centred care and the rights of the child by creating awareness of the challenges and rewards of raising a child with special needs. Going beyond just awareness, Opening Hearts is developing tools and facilitating programs such as Sibshops, R-word campaigns, a documentary and others are being planned – all to help and support these children, their families, professionals and the general public.
