We are excited to kick off our top 15 reasons to participate in the Kindness Moves Me 5K (visit our cover photo to sign up!) with this inspiring story of how the life of one of our neighbors struggling with addiction and poverty was changed by the kindness shown by a stranger (her landlord) and our volunteers! The first time Angelique was in the ESS payee program, she had been recently released from jail and returned to jail within a month. Recently, she was again released from jail after serving her full sentence and returned to services. Due to her legal charges, it was extremely difficult for her to find adequate housing, resulting in a nearly two month search, during which she lived in a hotel. With the help of the payee program and her own desire to start fresh she found a landlord who is supportive of her needs despite her history. Angelique meets with Payee volunteers on a weekly basis, openly discussing the challenge that money poses to an addict and participating in specialized supports to help her reach her goal of sobriety and stability. She is forming trusting relationships with the staff and volunteers who work her file so that ESS can provide the particular support she needs so that she will continue to strengthen her resolve for sobriety and integrate into her community with success.
