We are extremely proud to bring you new work by the incredibly gifted photographer, Clayton Bastiani! The exhibition is called “A thousand words”. Bastiani has recently pushed himself to make fantastical images, trying to create a sense of wonder and awe within as many pieces as he can. It’s not something he can do every time (they are quite time consuming and, on average, take between one and three days to make), but he likes making them and seeing the end results – as do we! Much of his photography is used to illustrate book covers around the world and he likes the storytelling aspect to some of his work very much. Unsure if he could write a whole book, he tries instead through one picture to suggest a tale far greater. Many of the photographs begin as pictures taken in small rooms full of clutter and artefacts. By learning manipulation techniques he was able to start overcoming this barrier. He has often considered himself an outsider in the photography world as he “plays” with his work (understanding that some viewers will love this and some will loathe it). It took a few years to build up confidence in making pictures (as opposed to taking them) and by finding photographers such as: Oscar Gustave Rejlander; Duane Michals; Francesca Woodman; Jerry Uelsmann (and many others) he finally realised he was not alone in this style of photographic work.
