We are going to host flag making parties here at Sojourns (stay tuned for planned gathering dates/info) or you can stop by anytime you have a few free minutes as we are setting up a prayer flag making station! :) You can also help by donating old craft supplies or material (see details below) Here is info from the website to explain more. MAKE A FLAG Making prayer flags is fun and simple. As the Dalai Lama’s message of loving kindness transcends all religion, so do prayer flags. Your flag may embody your religious prayer through symbols and words or it may be a creative expression of the love in your heart. Let your work be like a prayer. Fill each stitch or mark you make with the wishes in your heart: peace, joy, contentment, compassion, healing, abundance, wisdom, etc. The flags will be hung at sacred civil rights sites in Birmingham as well as the stadium where the Dalai Lama will speak. Your prayers will fly on the wind to honor and celebrate this momentous occasion. Make one or many! You can even host a party or event in your community. Invite your friends and all the generations of your family to a prayer flag party. Kids are welcome! Children’s handprints, drawings and writings make special, colorful expressions on brightly colored cloth. Children can learn about peace, prayer, the Dalai Lamas message through the process. MATERIALS You can sew, quilt, knit, paint, embellish, bead, embroider, draw, needle-point, duct tape, tie-dye, weave, crochet, collage, batik, type, stamp, silkscreen, etc! Use fabric markers, fabric paints, anything you want to Celebrate Your Inner Artist!™ (Just be careful that your flag isnt too heavy.) FUN IDEA: Upcycle a piece of meaningful cloth or fabric from your family–a hankerchief, a favorite t-shirt, a special textile of any kind. SIZE Your finished flag should measure 8 inches by 9.5 inches (20 x 24 centimeters). We will sew the flags together along the top of the 8” edge. The edges of your panel may be raw or hemmed. (OPTION: If you are hosting a workshop for many people, and you have access to a sewing machine, wed like you to sew all of your collected flags onto a 1/2 piece of twill tape or bias tape using a zigzag stitch and leaving less than 1 of space between each flag. But if not, well do it!) COLORS Traditionally, Tibetan prayer flags utilize five sacred colors: blue, white, red, green, and yellow, but the sky’s the limit! Use any colors you want! happyflagproject
