We are grateful to the animal kingdom for providing us with a home. This is Elsa, an eleven year old brindle greyhound. We wanted to spend the winter in Mt. Shasta writing books but we had no money to rent an apartment. We hoped to find a house-sitting opportunity for 3-6 months. Before we moved to India in 2006, we pet-sat for an entire year in Marin County. This time, we knew that after touring almost continually for 4 years we needed to get off the road and settle down for the winter. Driving across America in the cold and snow is not our favorite thing. We did it one year and got caught in a sub-zero blizzard in Iowa. We drove all the way across Iowa and Nebraska at no more than 30mph and saw over 40 cars that had slid off the road due to ice. Semis were jack-knifing in front of us. In one stretch of about a quarter mile, we saw 4 semis in the median with their sides ripped off and the contents strewn on the snow. One car slid off the road, rolled down a hill and burst into flames. It was like a frozen hell and reminded me of a Stephen King book. That experience made us vow to never again travel in snow and ice. So this year we decided to take a break and chill in Shasta. Someone who attended our teachings in Shasta heard that we were looking for a place to house-sit and needed someone to take care of her dog. Once again, the animal kingdom has provided us with shelter. We are immensely grateful.
