We are heading into one of the biggest outdoor weekends of the year. Right now the crappie spawn is in full swing. Crappie are being caught at the big reservoirs in six to eight feet of water over structure on small jigs and minnows. Expect the same at Horsethief. Crappie at Clark have been inconsistent and not in their usual haunts. Expect to find them in the cat tails on the north end. Expect to find bass in the bedding mode. Beds will be found around shallow muddy bottoms near weeds. Soft plastics fished dropshot style will work well for these fish. Remember keeping these fish out of the water too long or removing them all together will destroy the bed and reduce recruitment on this years crop. Catfishing is picking up with shrimp, liver and cut bait still the best producers. Remember using a large slip bobber will let you fish vertically reducing your hang ups in the vegetation that has accumulated due to low waters. Better yet if fishing Horsethief rent one of their stand up paddle boards to get out past the snags. Walleye have returned to the flats and drifting a jig and crawler or minnow is taking some keeper fish. Stay safe, keep you life jackets handy remember kids twelve and under must wear them at ALL times when on the water. May your lines be tight and the fish be with you.
