We are home and getting settled. I want to take the time to - TopicsExpress

We are home and getting settled. I want to take the time to explain what happened with Bob Smith. It is very important to him that you are all educated about about his situation. On Tuesday, Bob woke up with me at 5:45. I left for work at 6am. We talked and said goodbye. He said that he ate and grew very tired (completely out of character for Bob) so he went back to bed. At 8:30 the phone rang and pulled him out of what felt like a very deep sleep. As he was talking he felt like he wasnt awake and had a hard time speaking clearly. I called him at 10:15 and he sounded fully intoxicated. After a few questions, I called Bobs doctor and he said to take Bob to the ER. I was already into Oneida and I knew it would take me longer to turn around than to have someone meet me at St. Marys ER. I called Julie Smith and she picked up her brother and met me. At this time, Bobs language was minimal. He could only say 1 syllable words. He had no physical complications, no facial droop or anything else stroke related. He was immediately sent for a CAT scan and then an MRI. The CAT scan showed no tumor and no bleeding in the brain. The MRI confirmed a stroke on the left side of the frontal lobe in the area that controls speech. Once admitted they did and ECHO cardio gram and found that Bob has a PFO or small hole between the left and right atria (upper chambers) of the heart. This is VERY common 20% of people have a PFO. But in Bobs case, the blood clot went from the heart to the brain. After another test and discussions between the doctors, it has been decided that Bob will have the hole patched. He is to continue a normal but LOW KEY lifestyle for the next 6 weeks. He will be on blood thinners for 6 Months. His surgery, which will take 15-25 minutes total will be Monday August 18th and he will go home the same day. His speech is really good and I would say he is 97% of the way back as long as he takes his time. We are truly touched and humbled by all the love and prayers, visitors and calls from all of you. I will continue to update you on Bobs progress. We believe that his stroke was a blessing to make is aware of his heart. And we know that this is a very positive outcome and it could be so much worse. Again thank you to all of you.
