We are home now...Daddy is staying the night w/his little man. There isnt a lot of room in the PICU. His surgery was a success! The surgeon said he was able to remove the tumor along w/some of the lung. There were 3 specimens sent off to pathology, preliminary results: 1st--no cancer, 2nd and 3rd showed 10 cancer cells (microscopic). So he said the tumor/cancer really responded well to the chemo. When he first saw Christian in August, the tumor/cancer was comparable in size to a package of hot dog rolls. Today it was the size of a half dollar. His heart is back in its normal position and he only had to remove just a small part of the lower lobe of his left lung. He said a childs lung will continue to grow until the age of 8. So he expects that if all goes well, Christian can still have a normal, healthy sized lung. Christian tolerated his very long day of anesthesia well. They will keep him sedated as he will be a very unhappy boy when he wakes up. The surgeon had to cut into some muscle and the incision is larger than anticipated. He has 2 chest tubes, both of which are in between his ribs. He is going to be very uncomfortable for a while. The problem with the muscle that was cut...it may cause Christian to have scoliosis. The problem with keeping him sedated is that he may have a hard time coming off the medication. All I know is that this Grammie is taking it day by day. Our little warrior has been through more than most elderly folks have been through in their lifetime. When I left the hospital, his vitals were stable, they did give him some Benedryl as he was having a reaction. (Christian is very allergic to adhesives etc) So he was getting a rash on his face from where he was intubated. He is looking at 7-10 days in the hospital, not sure how long he will be in ICU. Just hoping and praying his recovery goes well. Im still nervous. I just got off the phone w/Daddy and Christian still hasnt woken up but is stable. We still havent found out when his chemo and radiation will begin again. We are so blessed, and very thankful for all of your prayers and kind thoughts. Sending love, hugs, and kisses to all.
