We are honored to be here to be a part of his Medal of Honor Ceremonies--- Sgt. Ryan Pitts will be awarded the Medal of Honor for Conpicuous Gallantry for his actions in Afghanistan in 2008. Lesly Garcias husband Israel Garcia, was one of the 9 heroes killed in Wanat and our founder, Laura Herzog is honored to be here in Washington DC with her for this. The medal is awarded to members of the armed forces who go above and beyond the call of duty while serving the country. Pitts served as a forward observer near Wanat Village in Afghanistan when he was involved in what would become the bloodies battle of the Afghan war. He was wounded in his leg and upper body, but kept fighting and stayed in radio contact with support troops until help arrived. By his actions, he helped change the course of battle and prevent further U.S. Casualties. Pitts said he was initially reluctant to accept the medal, but later decided that he owed it to the nine members of his unit who were killed in action that day and everyone who fought at that battle. He said while he will be receiving the honor, it belongs to all of them.
