We are in Durham today for a Teach English in China presentation at Durham University at 1pm! Yesterday we were at York University and heres the answers to 3 frequently asked questions: How do I get started as a teacher in China? Ive never worked as a teacher before. Most applicants for our programmes have not worked as a teacher before. In China you can be invaluable as a teacher of oral English even without experience, because working with you gives Chinese students the chance to improve their pronunciation. We help with our lesson plan library, London training by former teachers, and for the long term programme a TEFL course and two weeks of training in China before you start your job. Im interested in working for a short period in the summer, how does it work? We have summer internships placements available in July and August. July and the first half of August are the busiest periods for summer schools in China, so ideally you are available for that period. You would need to be available for at least 4 consecutive weeks. We offer 4, 6 and 8 week placements, and we assign you a placement based on your availability. Our summer placements are in medium sized cities close to Shanghai like Suzhou, Shaoxing and Hainning. You would fly into Shanghai and be picked up from the airport by your school. Can I apply and be placed in the same location as a friend? Yes absolutely, we place friends in the same location every year. The main thing is that you opt for the same service level as your friend (both in either free work placement or standard service option). Also not all locations can take on a lot of teachers, so its important you are open minded in terms to where in China you are placed.
