We are in fantastic spirit and ready for Sudan, says Katongo After leading Zambia to a 4-0 annihilation of Lesotho’s ‘ Likuena’ (Crocodiles) last Saturday, Chipolopolo skipper Chris Katongo is looking forward to the second of the two June FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and replicating a fine performance that left many fans strongly believing that Zambia could win Group D and go on to book their ticket at Brazil2014. Katongo told Cafonline that despite a dazzling performance against Lesotho, they were not being carried away and taking anything for granted. “We are busy working hard and competing for places because we are all motivated to do even better. Our target is six points and we need to remain focused to achieve that,” Katongo said Cafonline:First of all congratulations on your victory last week. Many of your fans were pleased with that showing against Lesotho and have their expectations heightened. How are you preparing for Sudan? Katongo:We have put the game against Lesotho behind us. After that match, we were back working again the following day. We were lucky we all came out clean and without injuries. Competition in the team is high but we have such a fantastic spirit. We are all looking forward to the game against Sudan. It is important for us to keep our focus and concentration because that is the only way we can win. Cafonline: In your first meeting of this qualifying phase, you lost 2-0 in Khartoum; a result which was later over-turned 3-0 in your favour by FIFA because Sudan fielded an ineligible player. What are your expectations of the game against a side that is no longer in the running to win the group but will try and come and seek revenge for the loss of those crucial points? Katongo:It was not easy playing in Khartoum. But that result is in the past. We have become even better since that game. Of course Sudan will be tough. We don’t expect an easy match because all the teams are improving everyday. It wasn’t easy against Lesotho and it won’t be easy against Sudan. We just have to work hard and do what the coach tells us to do. We believe we have the ability and skills to beat Sudan. We put everything in the hands of God and trust that our fans will also turn up as they did last week to cheer us and give us the motivation. It was great playing before a wonderful and supportive crowd and we look forward to the game. Like I said, with the fantastic spirit that we have in camp and the preparation we have put in, we are looking for a positive result because it’s important for us to maintain our group leadership which we intend to keep even when we have played game number six of this phase. We are confident but not underrating Sudan. We will do it.
