We are kindly inviting you to the “Farming as a Business Summit” scheduled for the 2nd – 3rd of October 2014 at the Meikles Hotel, Harare, Zimbabwe. This summit seeks to create a platform for dialogue among different players in the agriculture sector so as to come up with positive solutions on the factors influencing successful inclusion of smallholder farmers in the value chains in Zimbabwe. Once rated as the “Bread Basket” of Southern Africa, Zimbabwe is currently struggling to produce sufficient food for its own people. Often the country depends on imports and humanitarian assistance for food provision. The large scale agricultural productive base which had been eroded by the land reform programme saw the number of predominantly white large scale commercial farmers decreasing by a scale of more than 90% between 2000 and the current 2014. In the current context, relying on the small scale farmers is one of the surest ways of increasing the quantity and quality of locally produced agricultural products in Zimbabwe. The summit will also facilitate sharing of experiences about alternative methods for commercialising smallholder agriculture in Zimbabwe. The participants will represent farmer organizations, government departments, NGOs, private sector, research and academic institutions, a number of International Agricultural Research Centres and other stakeholders working with smallholder farmers.
