We are often asked, in our Managing Your Emotions workshop, how do I control my anger when someone does something to hurt me?. Our answer is always summarized by saying, think about the end goal for this relationship, if in the end you want to get along and you wish to have a positive healthy relationship with this person, do not do anything that would result in the opposite. Think of it this way, if I push you and lash out will that make you want to fix the relationship or lash out back at me? Thinking in terms of end goal pulls you out of the emotional state you are in and makes you strategic, empathetic and levelheaded. Sometimes that means giving them space and coming back to them when they cool down. You can control your emotions and help them control theirs by not adding to their emotionally drunken state.
