We are our Own enemies. I vividly remember when the issue of an irregular ascension of one unknown soldier named Tobias Minimah, to Chief of Army Staff (current COAS), at the expense of due process and at the detriment of discipline, integrity and merit in the military made the headlines. Over 31 superior, higher ranking officers were hurriedly retired to pave the way for the kinsman of Mr President to hold the coveted seat ahead of election year and at a time when internal security or a lack of it were tearing down the country. And so it happened. And when we wrote against this clear and ill advised disregard for military procedure and discipline based on merit and performance, the unfortunate ones were condemning us and chastising us with no sense of reasoning nor objectivity in their fury. Now, we are here. The news coming across military circles and insiders, is that, about 30 Top officers inclusive of 9 Generals have been/facing Court martial for a multiple of accusations ranging sabotage, conspiring to make the country ungovernable for Goodluck Jonathan, jeopardizing the war on terror, low performance, etc. Curiously, the whispers and snears emanating from this court martials and its proceedings within the military is that, mostly officers and soldiers from a certain region, of a certain tribe and ethnic affiliation are the targets. It goes further more to raise mixed feelings of a witch-hunt and a vendetta, especially when we analyze the various reasons and revelations as to why the fight against Insecurity and Boko-Haram is failing and largely ineffective by Jonathans Administration. Pointers of Corruption, Lack of Funding, Failure of Intelligence gathering, Political interference, ill equipped army, Lack of modern training, and an intentional overstretch of the insecurity and fighting across the emergency states whereby a few within the top echelon of the military brass and the Presidency are feeding fat off the bloated budgetary allocations for defense. It has gotten so filthy that it is rumored - a military general has gotten so stinking rich that he bought a housing estate in the Peoples republic of China. The basic fact is, no society can grow or make noticeable gains in its socio-political life if the concepts of tribalism, nepotism, sectionalism and mass corruption are not eradicated from the national mind set. Well, there is also no doubting the fact that... “Our corrupt leadership is a reflection of us the people, after all it is us the people that keep producing these leaders.” An advice: As we all are aware; Its election season again, and the politicians, goons and local champions are out and on the prowl as usual. They come every 4years and manipulate our thinking faculties and tingle our sensibilities. But, this excuse will not suffice in 2015, let Common Sense and Objective Decision-making rule over and conquer Emotion & Sentiments this time around. May we not be our own worst enemies, anymore.
