We are pleased to announce that high school English teacher Duane Johansen has been granted a fellowship by the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia to attend the Ties That Bind: Connecting to East Asia summer institute at Smith College in Northhampton, MA in July. The week-long seminar will focus on East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) connections to the United States (particularly the East Coast) through art, immigration, and trade throughout the history of our country. In addition to field trips to area cultural centers and museums, teachers will attend lectures by professors from Smith, Amherst, Brown, and other universities and will learn how to transfer this knowledge to students with the guidance of master teachers. This is quite an honor, as only 20 teachers from around the nation were chosen to attend, and the institute is usually reserved for social studies teachers, with preference given to teachers in the East. As an English teacher from rural Indiana, Mr. Johansen was pleasantly surprised to be chosen. Congratulations, Mr. Johansen!
