We are saddened to report that Gracie, the City of Alexandria’s first female police K9, died on Christmas Eve. Gracie trained and worked with K9 Officer Steve Escobar. He is also AWLA alumnae Zara’s handler. Many of you will remember Zara. She is the female Belgian Malinois who was surrendered to the shelter last year, recruited for the police force and is now an official Alexandria police K9. Zara, former AWLA shelter dog, will now continue in Gracie’s large paw prints, helping to protect the City of Alexandria with Officer Escobar. Gracie served the City of Alexandria for five years. In November 2013, she was diagnosed with kidney cancer and given only two to three months to live. However, Gracie defied all odds and survived for more than a year. Gracie loved to work and spend time with Officer Escobar and continued to work up until her death. Officer Escobar is extremely saddened by the loss of Gracie and has asked for donations to be made in her memory to the Alexandria Police Foundations’ Health and Welfare Program for Retired Police Dogs (alexandriapolicefoundation.org) and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (alexandriaanimals.org/donate). Zara, former AWLA shelter dog, will continue in Gracie’s paw prints, helping to protect the City of Alexandria. (Photos of Gracie, Zara and Officer Escobar) Alexandria Police Foundation
