We are so honored to be part of this special exhibit at the South Caroliniana Library! library.sc.edu/news/index.php?post_id=1522 “Home of the Palmetto: South Carolina and Its State Tree highlights the palmetto’s role in South Carolina history and culture, as well as its use as the primary symbol of the state,” said the exhibit’s curator, Laura Douglass Marion, a student in the master’s program in library and information science, with a concentration in archives and preservation. “The exhibit tells the story of the palmetto in three cases: ‘The Palmetto in Literature,’ ‘Our State Symbol,’ and “Art of the Palmetto Electrolysis’.” Most of the exhibit items are found in the USC Libraries’ collections, including those from South Caroliniana Library, South Carolina Political Collections, and Thomas Cooper Library. Exhibit visitors will find colorful children’s literature and picture books, both modern and historic; a badge from a political convention; county and university logos; a poster for the statewide Palmetto Tree Project that began in 2000; and a Civil War envelope. All of these items prominently feature the palmetto tree. “Found throughout the exhibit is the singular work of South Carolina artist Jim Harrison. The title image for the exhibit – a rustic barn topped with a painted palmetto tree on its roof – is his work. “Mr. Harrison is such a well-known and well-respected South Carolina artist, and we felt strongly that his lovely works should be included in the exhibit,” said Elizabeth Cassidy West, University Archivist. Home of the Palmetto: South Carolina and Its State Tree, which is free and open to the community, is located in South Carolinina Library’s Lumpkin Foyer through December 20. South Caroliniana Library is located on the historic Horseshoe on the University of South Carolina campus. It is open 8:30 a.m. through 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday.
