We are thrilled to honor Sleepin STEVEN ADAMS as this weeks Rider of the Week! Steven celebrates his 18th birthday today. Last weekend he participated in the Maple Leaf Nationals in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he earned second place in 17-18 Expert and Cruiser and also won the overall O Cup. Steven received his first BMX bike on his 9th birthday, when his dad bought a GT from a local bike shop. In 9 years of racing, Steven has raced on several different bikes from local bike shops, and he now rides proudly for the Staats Racing Team. Steven started his BMX career at Montrose BMX, when the Grand Junction track was not actively running. After 2 races in Montrose, Nick signed up the Adams family as track operators and began what we now know as Grand Valley BMX. Steven and his younger brother Spencer have grown up at the track, serving in every possible volunteer role over time. In his 9 years of racing, Sleepin Steven has achieved every possible top spot at the local, district, and state level: Track Points Champion, District #1, State #1, State Champion. He has made the Main Event at Nationals, and he earned the #3 spot in the Gold Cup Finals. BUT, his success didnt come easily. It took a lot of hard work and perseverance over time to advance through the ranks. (To learn more, view Stevens USA BMX Rider Profile at goo.gl/aTAAM2.) Steven has participated in many professional clinics, and he shares his racing knowledge with other riders through his series of Sleepin Steven Clinics. Steven attended Tope Elementary and the Challenge Program at East Middle School. Now a senior at Grand Junction High School, Steven is on the Orange and Black newspaper team, plays bari sax in the jazz band, is a member of the Mountain Bike team, German Club, and Interact Club. He is taking 6 AP courses this year. Steven missed 10.5 months of racing last year when he left the country to become a an exchange student in Germany through Rotary Youth Exchange. He didnt even touch a BMX bike during those months. He came home in July, trained hard and won BOTH the Class and Cruiser competition at the Colorado State Championship Finals. When asked for his thoughts on sportsmanship, Steven said, I think sportsmanship is important in BMX because BMX is a lot more than what happens on the track. Ive always considered the riders at Grand Valley BMX my family, so being sportsmanlike at the track for me is more like keeping a good relationship with my family. We are extremely proud of Steven, and we thank you for letting us tell you why we think he is worthy of Rider of the Week status. Be sure to give him a fist bump at this weekends races, and tell him Happy Birthday.
