We are very pleased to bring you a new exhibit by Jan Mathias Lesemann! The exhibition is called “Rajasthan – Threading the needle”. Lesemann traveled to and around Rajasthan, India and looked for a common but subtle thread that could tie an exhibition together. After photographing a number of scenes, he began to notice something subtle that set this place apart from almost any other, it was, the incredibly beautiful embroidery. The amazing work was everywhere, from grand ceilings to the common fabric. He knew instantly that this would be the core of the exhibition. While it is a celebration of craftsmanship, it is also a celebration of India and its ancient and glorious culture that trickles down through all levels of society. The work includes: The Masjid-i Jahān-Numā mosque, Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi and the Square inside Jaisalmer fortress. The ornamented wall in Fatehpur Sikri, the capital of the Mughal Empire during Akbar’s rein. The corridor in the Jama Masjid mosque in Fatehpur Sikri. The roof ornamentation inside the Tomb of Itimād-ud-Daulah, also known as “Baby Tāj” in Agra. Cenotaphs of Mirzā Ghiyās Beg and his wife inside the central chamber of the Tomb of Itimād-ud-Daulah in Agra. The interior of Musamman Burj inside Agra Fort, built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, for whom he also erected the Tāj Mahal. The salon inside Laxmi Niwas Palace in Bikaner. The Maota Lake and Gardens beneath Amber Fort near Jaipur. In a humorous touch, Lesemann includes a motorcyclist transporting duvets or quilts on the road to Mandawa. We are very proud to bring this well thought through exhibition that brings a different focus to a part of the world that is as complex and inspiring as the painstaking work that goes into each masterpiece.
