We are very pleased to bring you an new exciting quarterly exhibition by Mark Robert Reeve! The exhibition is called “The Faces of Sapa”. Mark’s first visit to Vietnam was in October 2011 when he flew into Hanoi with a plan to travel all the way south down to Saigon. Hanoi has a certain charm with its colonial buildings and casual but safe chaos. After staying there for a while he headed to Ha Long Bay before returning a few days later to Hanoi and then taking the road south as planned. It was an amazing trip but nonetheless he always felt he had missed out by not exploring the north of Vietnam. So on his way back from Kathmandu in June 2013 he decided to return and visit this fabled part of the world. Top of the list was the jewel of the northwest, the Hoang Lien Son mountain range and with it, the small market town of Sapa. The Sapa Lao Cai Province which is located at 1650m above sea level in northern Vietnam near the Chinese boarder is famous both for its rugged scenery and its rich cultural diversity as evidenced by the body of work. What may not be evident though is that the subjects of the photographs are people of the Black Hmong and Red Dzao tribes which are both sub groups of the Miao ethnicity of southern China who began a gradual migration southward in the 18th century and settled in the northern regions of Vietnam. The body of work transports the viewer to a place they may never have been and introduces them to a culture so old that it predates when records began. As the world continues to evolve and borders become more and more porous, photographs like these become records. In time, such collections will be the only evidence that remains of a long established culture lost forever to the sands of time.
