We are very proud to bring you a new exhibition by Harry Benz! The exhibition is called “Bounce” and covers many photographs from Harry Benz’s book of the same name. CIA Bounce is a basketball development programme in Canada that finds undiscovered talent and helps mold them into potential future stars of the NBA. It is actually a product of two different programmes that have come together, “CIA” which was run by Mike George and “Bounce” which was run by Tony McIntyre. Both were doing well and it made sense to combine forces, which they did and CIA Bounce was born. As you can imagine, it is extremely competitive. It is hard enough to get noticed, let alone selected to play. If you do get selected to play, it only gets tougher from there. Harry wanted to capture the energy, the striving, the sense of opportunity that, just like a 3 pointer, hung in the air whenever the players came together. To do that required many months attending practice, watching for the revealing expressions of determination, the angst of a missed shot and the thrill of achievement. In some ways photography and basketball are similar, both require talent, timing and seizing of an opportunity. Harry deliberately shot the series using only the ambient light in the gyms so as to interfere as little as possible. The photographs capture a wide range of emotions that go well beyond the feelings that flow from making or missing of a shot. What we see is the realisation that each moment is an opportunity to change one’s life - an opportunity that may never come one’s way again. This is what Harry was after.
