We are very sorry to report that our tapir calf, born January 4th, did not survive. The calf, named “Franklin,” had been pulled for hand-rearing because his first-time mother displayed poor maternal behavior. Zoo Keepers provided him round-the-clock care as he struggled with regular feedings and was being treated for pneumonia. Over the last 24-hours he required oxygen support, and it became clear his condition was extremely serious. He died yesterday afternoon. Your warm thoughts and support for Franklins heartbroken keepers are appreciated during this difficult time.
