We aren’t the Shepherd, Jesus is. It’s Jesus’ job to - TopicsExpress

We aren’t the Shepherd, Jesus is. It’s Jesus’ job to save/deliver/liberate/heal, not ours. We are the hired hands. We aren’t followed; we follow. We aren’t immovable; we scatter when the wild animals of a broken world start stalking. But we still have an important job: As hired hands our job is to point out the lost to the Shepherd in prayer; and to ask for help for the straying. Our job is to be welcoming toward the outcast, to try and see past the filth of the dirty, to demonstrate love toward the unloved. Our job is to open the door for hope to find the hopeless, to speak words of encouragement to the downcast. Our job is to create space for the Holy Spirit to show up, to try and create cracks for Jesus to soak into the masks of the cynical. Our job is to stick up for the attacked, and to love on the fearful and the wounded. Our approval, our understanding, our acceptance doesn’t matter. Our job is to live lives that don’t pretend at perfection, but that show a trust in the Shepherd that leaves those around us saying, “what is it that they have?” It is only then that we can ever hope to speak any kind of words worth hearing.
