We, as a community, need to offer proposals for the alternative - TopicsExpress

We, as a community, need to offer proposals for the alternative use of the site. The site is valuable real estate owned by Scottish Power so we have to accept that the latter will not simply donate it to the community; therefore our suggestions must be commercially viable and attractive to both commercial businesses, ELC and local councils. I believe this is the challenge facing us. The existing site is extensive and dissected by the coast road which we would like to retain. Therefore we should consider a variety of options which utilising both sides of the road and, when combined, will have commercial (non-industrial) and community benefits. I would support some previous ideas along the lines of, for example, an indoor leisure complex serving both the community and tourist trade (especially Seton Sands) all year round (all weathers!). This could incorporate a fun-pool with flumes and wave pools (indoor surfing?), a multi-purpose skate park for skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes, Soft Play, a small 10-Pin Bowling Alley, indoor fun golf, café and small carousels; the options are endless. We would avoid a swimming pool as this would have an effect on existing community facilities at Tranent and Prestonpans. On the commercial side, for example, a low rise coastal hotel offering conference, exhibition, corporate events and function (e.g. weddings) capabilities. I do not believe there is a substantial coastal hotel between Edinburgh and North Berwick. This is an alternative option to a low cost hotel. National treasures such as the John Muir Way and Battle Site would be retained and protected. We all would dearly love to keep the site as an unspoilt green belt area but we are faced with grim commercial reality, so we need to work together and come up with a short list of viable options. These are just ideas.
