We, as white people, need to understand that racism is more than the individual stories that we so readily discount. We would do well to learn that lesson by stopping to listen to the stories of those who feel oppressed. Just listen. Do not try to figure out why what they perceive isn’t true. Just listen. Do not even attempt to say (or think) “Yeah, but…” Just listen. And, for once, begin to accept that maybe their experiences are real. Stop looking for the flaws in the individual stories, and start listening to the pain, the han, of generations of others who have had to struggle day in and day out in a society that, at best, considers them invisible. Until and unless white people begin to understand that fact, we will continue to build upon that societal pain, or han.
