We at Healthy Kids Company want to promote Halloween fun and the ensuing rush that follows from collecting pillowcases full of candy. Let them eat candy (and cake!), then go back to normal. Cravings fulfilled, lessons learned (2 pounds of candy can make tummies and teeth hurt!), and the chance to be a kid (priceless!). Yes, the similarities between healthy and halloween usually ends with the letter “h”! But to make a point we threw a halloween party and managed to include lots of healthier treats (no one says this has to be strictly healthy!). Our party fare included a healthy start: pumpkin chili with cornbread fingers, carrot fingers with pumpkin hummus and tzatziki dip, roasted curried pumpkin seeds, spooky hardboiled eggs, and candy apple hamburger sliders (hamburger between two tomato halves, served with a stick, of course). We finished with all natural candies, mulled cider with cinnamon apple rings, popcorn, kettle corn, candied walnuts, caramel apples covered with nuts, homemade cupcakes, spice cookies, and more! The key is healthier, not strictly healthy, at Halloween. The key to choosing healthier treats and candy is easy: We love any treat that includes a protein (nuts, seeds), whole grain (popcorn, kettle corn, some pretzels), fruit (chocolate covered fruit), or chocolate (the darker the better!). And we seek out candy made with sugar (not HFCS), butter (not trans fats, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil). By following these simple hints, Halloween can be healthier! Our halloween party video includes fun decorating and food ideas:
