We at Just a Ball Game? are pleased with the swift investigation and today a sanction by UEFA following a homophobic banner displayed by some of Bayern Munichs fans in a resent Champions league game. The club will have a partial closure of the ground with an estimated loss of between 15-20% of revenue lost with fans being unable to buy tickets in the part of the ground where the banner was displayed, and a fine of around 10,000 euros will also be imposed. This sends out a huge message to fans and clubs in the European competition, that this sort of behavior will not be tolerated any longer. The sanction and fine are for the discriminatory behavior of Bayern supporters and the displaying of an illicit banner, UEFA said. It is hoped that in the future should any such sanctions be imposed again that UEFA will back up their action with a little more education around this type of issue and state homophobia as well as or instead of discriminatory behavior and illicit and also use terms such as LGBT in stead of gay and also explain as to why these types of actions taken by a minority of fans are so hurtful and unwanted within the beautiful game. The competition organisers introduced a 7 point plan to combat homophobia at a UEFA led conference in Barcelona back in 2006, but until now have been reluctant to challenge clubs whose fans misbehaved in this way. Something for the governors of the game in England based at Wembley to look at implementing?
