We begin a new month today, named after Julius Caesar, whose birthday was in this month. The Roman Senate that honored him could never have known that one would follow the great Caesar that would make his memory and influence seem insignificant by comparison. While it is true that just two years after his death he became the first Roman figure to be deified, it was his great-grandnephew, Gaius Octavian, who would become the first Roman emperor. Just before Christ’s birth, Octavian would be named pater patriae, the father of the country, but a little-known Galilean would topple his beloved Rome—not with the might of trained armies, but the power of the living God. We may hearken back to ancient Rome as we view today’s calendar, but may we give to God what is God’s: our hearts, our devotion, our very lives today.
