We begin to see that awareness arises in the absence of identification with thought and is not an experience that needs cultivation. In fact, we see that awareness is not an experience at all but the ground from which all experiences arise. This is an important distinction because it clarifies the role of effort in practice. Wise effort is the understanding that what is intrinsically here cannot be willfully induced. The sense of self arises with willful effort, and therefore wise effort is the release of all tension associated with will. p52 ~Awakening; A paradigm shift of the heart, Rodney Smith
