We believe in attention to detail, which is one reason that we have an entire one day workshop dedicated to the general and specific warm up - I teach it for the last time in 2013 on this coming sunday - below is a short excerpt from the 59 page manual I recently read that a lot of successful business men (and women) have in common that they have experienced bankruptcy early in their career, before becoming highly successful. In a similar fashion, a 1-2 year struggle with an overuse injury, sometimes, is one of the best things that can happen to a young athlete or fitness client. Early on, they just want to train and have not yet had a direct experience of the need for a proper general preparation. The injury changes that and they get a DIRECT experience that an adequate general preparation helps them train (and compete) injury free. In track and field, Olympic weightlifting or gymnastics no athlete would ever dream of starting a practice session without an extensive warm up. First, it is part of the culture. Second, athletes from these sports inherently know that they simply cannot perform the movements without thorough preparation. In racquet sports and team sports the culture is often different. If athletes start their practices with low intensity drills, they actually – at least at lower levels of competition – don’t experience a direct need for a general preparation (until they have had an injury). It does not help that some coaches choose to let the athletes be responsible for being ready when practice begins, instead of having a systematic supervised warm up be a part of the training session. While it is crucial that the athlete can take responsibility for their own performance and train optimally, even when no one is watching, delegating the responsibility is signalling that the coach does not perceive that component of the training as very important. On a similar note, if the personal trainer asks the client to be warmed up before the session begins and cool down on their own after the session ends, it signals to the client that the warm up and cool down are not very important If you believe in attention to detail you will like this workshop.
