We burn diya in honour of the Inner Self--the Divine Jyoti that constantly burns in the Ajna Chakra--the point between the two eye-brows. The flame represents the Guru, the Supreme Being. In the final stages, the Divine Light begins to expand infinitely, encompassing the entire universe. Then the ego/mind gets dissolved in the Light of the Self. Here the seer and the seen become one and no duality of consciousness is experienced. The three stripes on the forehead represent the three gunas while the red mark represents the Supreme Light that transcends the three gunas. The mind is constantly under the sway of the three gunas.
