We call them convicts, offenders, inmates and a host of other terms in order to dehumanize our incarcerated citizens. When they complain about abuse, the common response is, well, if you dont like jail, you shouldnt have committed that crime. As a whole, our nation looks the other way when corrections officers beat, rape and otherwise abuse incarcerated citizens. These abuses come home to roost. The abused persons are your neighbors, they are your family, they are your friends. When the law refuses to protect some people, they lose respect for the law. That cycle only breeds more crime. I am pleased to see one facility receive the scrutiny it deserves. At least one facility will be held accountable for the inhuman treatment of people.
