We can debate, but we shouldnt choose which facts to argue on. Heres a myth: Israel withdrew from Gaza, and then after such a magnanimous gesture, found itself under rocket fire. Its a nice fiction, the kind youd imagine from a state whose army has killed hundreds in days, some seventy percent of whom are civilians. 7 out of 10. Just think about that for a moment. And here comes another: Israel fears democracy, and gets along best with dictatorships. While Israel evacuated settlers from the densely-populated coastal strip, a recognition that its attempt to colonize that particular territory had failed, Israel kept control of Gazas coastline, most of its borders, and airspace. (Egypt is complicit in that blockade, by choking off Gazas only other international border.) Thus, it is false to say Israel walked away from Gaza and then got attacked--instead, Israel changed the form of control it exerted over Gaza, but never stopped attacking Gaza. And this is not because of Hamas violence which, while immoral in its form, is motivated not by a desire to attack but to defend. Israel occupied Gaza before Hamas existed, and its unlikely that Israel would relieve Gaza of its daily suffering and misery--suffering it, and Egypt, are responsible for--if even Hamas was dissolved. After all, the West Bank is dominated by Fatah, and Palestinians there do not exactly live freely. (Although Gazans generally live a far more restricted life.) The last time Israel so punished Gaza, the Arab Spring was in its summery days, and Arab FMs, along with Turkeys, quickly intervened to put an end to the violence. This time, with the Arab Spring in its dismal winter, and dictatorship and sectarianism nearly everywhere ascendant, nobody is helping Gaza--and most Arab regimes that are involved are involved in suffocating Gaza. Democracy works in Palestinian favor, and dictatorship against them. Notice who our supposedly so democratic ally picks to work with, time and again.
