We can now reveal that the subject of the rare photo is Lizzie Borden’s cat, Blackie. Lizzie commissioned the picture of her cherished pet, and it’s important for two reasons. It is the only photo that has surfaced to date that offers a glimpse inside Lizzie’s residence, Maplecroft, and it clearly helps to demolish the myth that Lizzie abused and killed animals. The compelling image of Blackie remains on display in our Borden exhibit at the FRHS through mid-October.
