We cant even begin to describe how magical last night was for some of the youngest members of Americas Family at the Yellow Ribbons United Tiny Heroes Winter Wonderland. The spirit of the season abounded with comfort, joy, laughter, and generosity! The first of its kind event hosted by our friends and fellow TAPS family members, Emma & Derrick Dockery of Yellow Ribbons United, featured tons of sponsored activities, goodies, and toys all to recognize that the smallest among us have served and sacrificed for this nation too. Thank you to everyone who helped make this special night for TAPS kids happen including the USMC Toys for Tots, the Washington Redskins, Hasbro, SAIC, Krispy Kreme, American Girl, Sesame Street/Elmo, TY, NJVC, Build a Bear and many more! You helped make the season bright for our countrys tiny heroes! Well leave the summation of the night to a surviving spouse and mom extraordinaire in attendance: Every year around the holidays, the boys and I pick out gifts at the store for children and bring them to the local firehouse to donate to Toys for Tots. Little did I know, or ever imagine, tonight my boys would be the recipients of some of those gifts donated. They opened the doors to the Toy Shop and filling the room were tables and tables of gifts for our tiny little heroes to choose from. It stopped me dead in my tracks right there in the doorway and I broke down in tears. As I saw the joy in my own childrens faces, I imagined all the other children around the country who also receive these donated gifts, specifically those who are in far more need than my own. Look, my kids dont need toys. What they do need though is to feel loved and not forgotten about especially around the holidays when commercial after commercial on the tv and radio remind us about the sacrifices our active duty troops and families make. These toys, theyre far more than toys to them. They mean love. They mean support. They mean hope. They each got to make a Build a Bear tonight as well. They each named theirs Tiny Hero. You see, its not just a bear to them, its a memory of being loved and comforted by others. I can only imagine thats what those toys mean to those other children as well when they receive them...and thats why I broke down in tears. Do good for others, you never know when its going to come back to you.
