We cant get rid of this old mans image, which isnt helped by certain journalists who come to the main competitions, said England head coach and newly appointed President of World Bowls, John Bell. Instead of concentrating on the competition, they concentrate on the crowd. And the average age is old, thats the nature of the beast. But the ironic pieces have been done to death. Bowls is what it is and were extremely proud of it. Even the journalists who take the mickey out of bowls cant help but acknowledge the decency thats involved in the game, the behaviour and etiquette. Its understated and under-promoted and under-appreciated. Yes, the ironic stories about bowls have worn a bit thin but so too has the continuous blaming of others for the games demise. Surely antiquated rules, overbearing etiquette, outdated dress codes, and a lack will to modernise the game is more responsible than the odd piss-taking article.
