We checked 9 boxes today for signs of wood duck nesting. 2 were empty. One was being occupied by an owl an one by bumble bees. 1 had been robbed I its honey bees probably by a bee keeper an one had a honey bees nest that may have suffered from colony collapse disorder then was attacked by woodpeckers. The other 3 all in a row 60 meters apart all had active honey bees nests. Although this is significant it seems evident that it is time for a change in strategy. We FOFEC will maintain these boxes until the or the trees they are hung in fall but we will no longer be hanging new boxes. It is time to give nesting tubes a try.
