We continue to publish Ivan Mizin’s notes about polar bears on Cape Zhelania. In the end of July, polar bears began to come from the southern part of Severny (Northern) Island more and more often. The first of them was a medium size for the species male that was attracted by the smell from the kitchen of the workers engaged in cleaning of old wastes on the territory. A female with two cubs that looked like been born last year appeared several days later. And then… then new bears appeared almost every day. Both grownup males that had to be banished from the base and mother-bears with cubs – they settled permanently on the rocks of the cape and snow patches along the shore hidden from the western wind, and also young bears studying to live independently and not knowing what a human being is. And it’s a pity there was a lost baby-bear among them. Every year such small bears that lost their mothers because of some reason are encountered. This bear cub appeared on Cape Zhelaniya lately. The baby was the size of an average German shepherd and panically afraid of all other bears bigger than him. Only people working on Cape Zhelaniya did not seem dangerous for him and could help him to stay alive. Certainly this bear cub will not likely to survive during the next winter but for the present he is under human protection. Moreover, Cape Zhelaniya is now a territory of the National Park where all animals are taken under protection.
