We deeply apologize for the great anxiety and inconvenience caused by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, which continues to affect the residents of Fukushima and the broader society. Contaminated groundwater has been found in some parts of the ground by boring surveys between Units 1 to 4 and the sea. The contaminated water has been seeping into an open conduit inside the power station’s port. (Please note that there has been no significant change in the water quality of seawater outside of the open conduit.) We are to implement urgent and drastic countermeasures in a multilayered manner to address this issue. < Urgent countermeasures > - Pumping up contaminated water from trenches (underground ducts through which a pipe and a cable run) where high-density contaminated water has accumulated. [Planned to be started in mid-August] - Pumping up groundwater from areas that contain contaminated groundwater. [Currently underway] - Confining contaminated groundwater by changing the condition of soil surrounding such areas via ground improvement, thus making it difficult for water to permeate the soil. [Planned to be completed in mid-October] < Drastic countermeasures > - Pumping up groundwater from areas surrounding the reactor buildings and the turbine buildings [Construction is planned to be started in October; the operation is planned to be started in September, 2014] - Building up a water shielding wall (made of steel pipe sheet pile). [Currently under construction and planned to be completed in September, 2014] - Building up a water shielding wall (made of frozen soil). [Currently under feasibility study] Ends
